Chatham, although often viewed as one town, is actually two separate and distinct municipalities in Morris County: Chatham Borough and Chatham Township. Chatham Borough covers 2.5 square miles and has approximately 3,200 housing units. Downtown Chatham, located along Main Street in Chatham Borough, has lots of specialty shops and restaurants. The Chatham Train Station is located downtown and is within walking distance for most residents offering an easy commute to NYC. Most of the homes and neighborhoods in Chatham Borough were established prior to the 1960s. Many of the homes are situated on compact property lots and feature old world charm - most were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Chatham Township covers 9.4 square miles and has approximately 4,000 housing units. Chatham Township is more southern and less densely populated. Most of the homes and neighborhoods were established beginning in the 1950s and feature larger property sizes. Chatham Township offers lots of townhome and condo units for home buyers. It is common for builders in the Chathams to knock-down and replace older ranch and cape homes with high-end new construction. In 2005, Chatham Borough was recognized by Money Magazine as one of the “Best Places to Live” in the United States, ranked 9th. The Chathams have a joint school district.

Chatham townhome and condo neighborhoods include Sutton Woods, Heritage Green, Rosevalle, Briarwood, Coach Light, Chatham Court, Chatham Glen, The Chatham, and The Willows.

The Chatham Borough Train Station offers commuters train service to Morristown, Hoboken, and to New York Penn Station via the Morristown Line on NJ Transit.

The Chatham school district is a regional public school district serving the students of Chatham Borough and Chatham Township for grades K through 12. There are 3 primary schools (K–3) Milton Avenue, Southern Boulevard, and Washington Avenue School. Lafayette School is for grade 4 and 5. Chatham Middle School serves grades 6–8 and Chatham High School serves students in grades 9–12.

Chatham Recreation is a joint venture between Chatham Township and Chatham Borough and offers a variety or programs and activities for its residents which include indoor and outdoor sports, band, and teen activities. Colony Pool is located in Chatham Township and is open for membership to its residents and the surrounding towns. It has a sand bottom pool, six tennis courts, a playground and a full snack bar. Chatham Borough has a municipal swimming pool which is located at Memorial Park and is open to residents only.

There are excellent shopping facilities close to Chatham which include the center of Chatham Borough, the Livingston Mall, the Short Hills Mall, Downtown Summit, Downtown Madison, and the Green at Morristown.
