Madison Borough (07940) is located in southeast Morris County, NJ - about 30 miles west of New York City. The community has a total area of 4.2 square miles and has approximately 5,640 housing units. The Borough was named after the 4th president of the United States, James Madison. The community was given the nickname "Rose City" after the Civil War because of its prosperous rose industry at the time. Madison has many neighborhood parks and tree-lined streets, as well as a thriving downtown business district with specialty shops and restaurants. The Madison Train Station is located downtown and is within walking distance for many residents. The train station offers an easy commute to NYC which makes the community very desirable. Most of the homes and neighborhoods in the Borough were established prior to the 1960s. Many of the homes are situated on compact property lots and feature old world charm. Beautiful victorian and colonial homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s are common. In recent years, builders have found it profitable to knock-down and replace older ranch and cape homes with high-end new construction. Some of the housing developments and neighborhoods include: The Hill, Knollwood, Fairwoods, Shadylawn, Bottle Hill, Madison Heights, Ridgedale Park, Cole Park, Ardsleigh, Stonehedge, Oak Knoll, Orchard, and Cross Gates.
