Madison is located in southeast Morris County and is approximately 30 miles west of New York City. The town was named after the 4th president of the United States, James Madison. Madison was well know for its prosperous rose industry after the Cilvil War and was given its nickname "Rose City." Madison has a wide range of housing opportunities, from garden apartments, to starter homes to larger residences. Madison has many neighborhood parks and tree lined streets, as well as a thriving downtown business district with many specialty shops and restaurants.

Madison townhome and condo neighborhoods include Rosewood at Madison, Madison Commons, Rolling Hill Court, and Madison Green Village.

Madison is home to Giralda Farms, a planned office development that occupies 175 acres. This business park houses the corporate headquarters of Atlantic Mutual Insurance, Maersk Lines, Quest Diagnostics, Wyeth, and the offices of Schering-Plough.

Madison has easy access to Route 24, which connects to Route 78 in the East. Madison has a train station with service to Penn Station (NYC) as well as to Hoboken (NJ) via the NJ Transit Morris/Essex Line.

The Madison Public Schools serve students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Schools in the district include three elementary schools: Central Avenue School, Kings Road School, and Torey J. Sabatini School. There is also Madison Junior High School (7-8) and Madison High School (9–12). Madison is the home of Drew University and has the Madison-Florham Park Campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University.

There are excellent shopping facilities close to Madison which include the Downtown area of Madison, the Livingston Mall, the Short Hills Mall, Downtown Summit, and the Green in Morristown.
