Mt. Arlington is mostly a suburban residential community with a small commercial zone. The town borders Lake Hopatcong, which is New Jersey's largest man-made lake. Mount Arlington was once a thriving resort town in the era before the world wars and every summer thousands of people would travel to the town and vacation in the hotels along the lake. The Bertrand Island Amusement Park, which existed from 1928-1983, featured a world famous carousel and roller coaster and is now the site of Lakeshore Village, a luxury townhome community. Homes in Mount Arlington range from summer cottages, to small capes and ranches, to Victorian lakefront mansions. The town’s nickname is “The Jewel of Lake Hopatcong.”

The Mount Arlington Train Station opened in 2008. The NJ Transit Morris-Essex Line and Montclair-Boonton Line both pass through the station with service to the Hoboken Terminal (NJ) or Penn Station (NYC). Lakeland Bus service is also available to NYC with parking at the train station. Mt. Arlington is conveniently located close to Routes 80, 46, 10, 15, and 206.

The Mount Arlington School District serves public school students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Edith M. Decker School serves students in grade K–2. The Mount Arlington Elementary school serves students in grades 3-8. For grades 9-12, public school students attend Roxbury High School in Roxbury.

Mount Arlington is ten minutes from the Rockaway Townsquare Mall which is anchored by Macy’s, JC Penny’s, Lord & Taylor, Target, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Best Buy and Toys'R'Us. Rockaway Townsquare Mall is one of the largest and most modern malls in New Jersey. The Ledgewood Mall, Roxbury Mall, and lots of shops on Route 10 are close by as well. The International Trade Zone Shopping Center in Mount Olive, NJ is also close by with large chain stores like Lowes, Old Navy, and Walmart.
