Netcong has a total area of .9 square miles. Portions of Lake Musconetcong are located in Netcong. The borough was formerly know as South Stanhope and was incorporated in 1894 from parts of Mt. Olive, Roxbury and South Stanhope. Netcong received its name from the Musconetcong River.

Netcong townhome and condo communities include: Netcong Heights and Amodola Court.

Several major highways pass through Netcong which include Interstate 80, Route 46 and Route 206. There is a New Jersey Transit train station in Netcong. Both the Morristown Line and the Montclair-Boonton Line serve the Netcong Train Station, with service to Hoboken or to New York City via Midtown Direct. Midtown Direct service to Penn Station NY requires a change of trains for Netcong passengers. This usually happens at Dover or Newark's Broad Street station.

Netcong serves public school students from Pre-K through eight grade at Netcong Elementary School. For grades 9 - 12, public school students attend Lenape Valley Regional High School, which serves Netcong and the Sussex County communities of Stanhope and Byram Township.

There are some great recreational facilities an parks located in Netcong which include DiRenzo Park, Dell Avenue, Arbolino Park, Indian Field, and Lake Musconetcong State Park. The borough also holds Netcong Day every year in September. Netcong is home to the Growning Stage, which is a regional theater.
